We are an engineer service learning class in University of California, Merced called the "NISE Net team", sponsored by Foster Farms and PG&E. We have been tasked by NISE Network to help spread the awareness of nanotechnology and to educate the public on its applications and benefits. To achieve this goal, we collaborate with Mr. Ron English, a 7th grade science teacher at Cruickshank Middle School. We develop laboratory experiments that demonstrate some of the properties and processes found on the nanoscale. This year, the NISE Net team has decided to develop an experiment to demonstrate a pertinent biological process relatable to seventh grade students. Our biological process of cellular transport will create a foundation for more complex biological concepts while encouraging an understanding of nanoscale processes.
NISE Network (Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network) is a community consisting researchers and informal science educators who are dedicated to spread public awareness and understanding of nanoscale science, engineering, and technology. It was originally formed in 2005 and welcomes anyone who are interested in nanoscale research to join their community. The community of the NISE Network is organized around eight regional hubs in United States and each of the hubs helps researchers connect with museums, host workshops, and provide support.
